The Canajoharie Boiling Pot Wintergreen Park

Simple, beautiful Wintergreen Park. Relax at the park, a gem of natural beauty located in the Village of Canajoharie just 1.5 miles from the center of the village.

The park features picnic areas and recreational facilities nestled on 72 acres of woodlands plus the spectacular Canajoharie Gorge. The gorge is a geologic wonder, revealing fossils of ancient creatures encrusted in its walls of shale and granite. Enjoy the gorge from the Scenic Trail, a mile long path leading to the Overlook, an observation deck perched above the majestic, 45' high Canajoharie Falls. The famous "pot that washes itself", named by the Mohawk Indians as Canajoharie is found in the creek’s limestone bed.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE The park offers a pavilion (reservations are necessary, 673-5512) with eating facilities for up to 200 people, a large barbecue pit, and a caretaker's headquarters with a snack bar and rest rooms. Ample parking is available at the entrance to the Scenic Trail. Parking is also found at the pavilion, and picnic table area. There is a playground area for children. What is best about the park is that it is free to the public and open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 9:30 am to 9:30 pm. Relish the solitude of the wild next to Canajoharie Creek and enjoy the natural beauty as the Mohawk Indians of the past did. No swimming is allowed.

DIRECTIONS: From the east or west, take the NYS Thruway to Exit 29. After paying toll turn right at the first stop sign onto Route 5S. Turn left at the first traffic light onto Church St/Route 10. Turn left at the next stop light (our famous “dummy light”) onto Montgomery Street. Make the first right onto Moyer St. Stay on Moyer until it ends at a stop sign. Turn right onto Carlisle Road. The entrance to Wintergreen Park is about ½ mile up on the right. From the North or South take Route 10 to the dummy light in Canajoharie then follow directions above from that point.
